The food situation has gotten a little better. Breakfast is the same everyday which is a croissant and yogurt, but we have figured out how to get our moneys worth from the cafeteria. It turns out they have a few giant pizzas everyday. They are supposed to be single serve but we decided that they are soo splitalble. Last night me and my new friend Maggie split one and it was plenty of food and then we were able to only use one meal ticket between the two of us, and we are going to split lunch today. This way we can save money and eat at nicer places when we go out to eat.
Yesterday was the first day of classes. It looks like my french class is going to be a lot of work. We have workbook exercises online (which I had to pay $50 for an access code to do these, so much for an $8 amazon book) and journal entries in french required for everyday we are here. I think my other class is going to be a joke though. All he did was talk at us for 2 hours about the enlightenment. Like, seriously who doesn’t know what the enlightenment was? He also gave us some art historical misinformation but whatever.
During my class break I rode the RER down to the Saint-Michel and Notre Dame stop and took pictures of the cathedral. It started raining while I was down there so I went to a cafe and had some coffee while I waited. I still have not figured out how to order coffee the way I like it. I tried “cafe” then realized that was expresso. Then I tried “cafe americaine” which I was expecting to be an americano but it wasn’t what I expected (I’m not sure what it was). Next I plan to order “cafe americain au lait” and see what result I get.
Last night a bunch of us went out to explore the Parisian nightlife. It is nothing like Athens nightlife. Everything starts early. The metro stops running at 12:30 so we have to leave downtown before then. In Athens sometimes I don’t go to social events until 12:30. I thought everything in Europe was later (like dinner ect.) but we were wrong. I think the same group is going to the Eiffel tower tonight.
I really enjoy the friends I have made from other Georgia schools, but they are very different from me as far as interests. The only thing I miss really about home is having friends who are more like me. Not that these people aren’t great but its just nice to have similar likes with your friends.
